The following is a compilation of posts made in the days leading up to the Republican Party of Minnesota’s 2012 state convention. Each offers a reason to support Dan Severson as the party’s endorsed candidate for U.S. Senate.

A Grassroots Fixture

Everywhere I went, he was there. That was a big reason why I decided to throw my meager support behind Dan Severson for U.S. Senate.

After years of heckling from the political sidelines, the advent of the Tea Party inspired me to activism in 2009. I fired up a blog and podcast under the name Fightin Words, and began attending every conservative community event I could physically get to. That quickly resulted in a network of new relationships with people of like mind. Whether Tea Partiers, libertarians, or established conservative grassroots activists, all were united in their abhorrence at the “fundamental transformation” imposed by President Obama and radical Democrats like Senator Amy Klobuchar. GOP Must Go All-In on Employee Freedom

We should clone Senator Dave Thompson. At a recent meeting of the Southwest Metro Tea Party in Chanhassen, the freshman legislator joined Senator David Hann along with their House colleagues Representatives Mary Franson, Ernie Leidiger, and Doug Wardlow in previewing the Reform 2.0 initiatives proposed for this year’s legislative session. At one point, Thompson declared that he would not weigh his prospects for re-election in his decision to support employee freedom (also known as right-to-work). The line earned rousing applause, and for good reason. Thompson understands that he was not sent to St. Paul to advance his political career. He was sent to advocate for his constituents’ fundamental rights.

Unfortunately, if murmurs through the grapevine are true, there are a significant number of Republican legislators who are skittish about joining Thompson and Representative Steve Drazkowski in pursuit of employee freedom.  They worry about the effect it may have on their re-election campaigns. That concern misses a number of points, both principled and practical. Continue Reading GOP Must Go All-In on Employee Freedom…

The first community organizer.

One of the current hot button issues in Minnesota is Voter ID. There are bills in the state house and the state senate which would modernize registration and record keeping, and require photo identification at the polls. Critics of the plan speculate it may disenfranchise voters in peculiar situations, such as women living in domestic violence shelters.

Such criticism only accounts for one kind of disenfranchisement, access to the polls in unusual circumstances. It ignores the extent to which voters are currently disenfranchised by the fraud enabled by the system.

In Minnesota, we have an unholy trinity of provisions which invite fraud. We do not require photo identification at the polls. We have same-day registration which may not get verified for up to six months after an election. Perhaps most egregious, we let each voter who is registered vouch for up to 15 who are not.

What would you say if I told you the locks on your doors were a waste of time and money? After all, if you’re like most people, no one has ever unlawfully entered your home. In fact, there’s little evidence that anyone has ever tried. So why do you waste time installing and utilizing those silly deadbolts?

If that argument sounds ludicrous, which it should, realize it is precisely the same argument being utilized by opponents of photo identification and other sensible election integrity measures being pursued by Republican controlled legislatures throughout the union. The Washington Post reported on the debate Monday. The article highlighted arguments akin to you should not lock your doors because no one has tried to get in.

Minnesota Election Officials Treat Voters Like Confused Children

When you head to the polls today, rest assured that your determination to vote for the candidate of your choice will not be derailed by the “intimidating” presence of a button on someone’s shirt reading “Please ID Me.” You will not be lulled into a deep state of hypnosis, and compelled to vote against your intent, upon gazing at a t-shirt promoting Tea Party Patriots.

There are two reasons for this. One, you are an intelligent self-determining individual able to hold your course despite others’ apparel. Two, on Monday, a U.S. district court judge ruled in favor of restricting such apparel.
