Editor’s Note: The following is the prepared text of the LEA 2010 Award Banquet Keynote Address delivered on Thursday, February 10, 2011. The theme of the 2010 LEA report was “The Iron Cage of Bureaucracy.” Additional info can be found at LEA’s website.
Thank you, Gordon. And thank you members of LEA for inviting me to address your banquet this year. A special thanks is due to Sue Jeffers for recommending me to the LEA board with the enthusiasm that only Sue can muster.
This isn’t the kind of environment where I am the most comfortable, speaking before legislators and assorted movers and shakers. Once I was invited, a nagging burden developed in the back of my mind to prepare remarks as early as possible so I could polish them up and be ready to go. Alas, I procrastinated until late last night. But I’m glad I did, because there have been a handful of recent experiences and events which are strongly indicative of both the political philosophy which the Tea Party represents, and the kind of messaging and tactics which must be employed by both conservative politicians and activist groups who care about liberty. Kevin Smith Loses Weight, Feels Bad About It

“Clerks” director Kevin Smith has lost 65 pounds after an embarrassing incident where he was deemed too heavy to fly last year.
In an interview with Joy Behar on her “HLN” show last Tuesday, Smith shared that the moment made him angry and spurred him to lose weight. He said: “I felt at that moment, I was like, ‘You know what? I’ll lose the weight, but I’m not putting on thinner clothes.’ Because why? I’m still the same person I was when I was 65 lbs. heavier.”
He added that the incident made him a more forceful advocate for overweight people, noting: “I feel mixed feelings about losing the weight. I sympathize far more with heavier people than I ever will with thin. I’ll never be thin.”
Why, if I may be so bold as to ask, would anyone ever have “mixed feelings” about healthy weight loss? What is an “advocate for overweight people?” What is this disenfranchised constituency which needs Kevin Smith to speak on its behalf?
Richard Dreyfuss Takes a Bite Out of CPAC, Preaching Civics and Civility

NRB’s Kathy Shaidle recently reminded us of the folly of too quickly endorsing celebrities who espouse conservative views. It is a sentiment that was likewise expressed by S.E. Cupp this week on her new internet radio show. In short, we are constantly looking for conservative heroes, and thus constantly setting ourselves up for disappointment. Cupp astutely evoked the one-time fervor behind “Scott Brown for President” as an example. Words are cheap. Our judgment should be reserved for actions.
Hollywood curmudgeon Richard Dreyfuss presents a similar disclaimer before waxing political. He shared it in a Poliwood interview with PJTV’s Roger L. Simon at CPAC.
I think that there is, in America, an inexplicably ecstatic view of Hollywood celebrity which is in direct proportion to the contempt we feel for celebrity, so that you can be elected governor, and you can be told to “get the hell out of my hotel.” And that co-exists in our minds.
So whenever, as a young celebrity [when] I used to get on talk shows, I would say you should mistrust everything I’m about to say. I have been vetted and praised in a certain art form, and I’ve been given the right to sit here and spout my political beliefs. Just because of that, you should mistrust what I say. But I’m a big believer in Richard, and I think I’m real smart. So I’m going to tell you my political beliefs, because I’ve been asked. But that doesn’t mean you have to believe it. And I’ve said that at every talk show I’ve ever done.
Avowed Anti-Capitalist Michael Moore Sues Weinsteins… Over Profits

Filmmaker Michael Moore has sued Harvey and Bob Weinstein, accusing the brothers of “Hollywood accounting tricks” and “financial deception” that cheated him out of at least $2.7 million in profits from the hit documentary Fahrenheit 9/11.
Moore’s claim may be legitimate. It may not be. Regardless, his choice to sue is further evidence in the ongoing case against his character in the court of public opinion.
Moore’s entire career has centered around excoriating capitalism and profit.
One of Moore’s most strongly held convictions is that, as he declared on the CNN program Crossfire in 2002, “Capitalism is a sin. This is an evil system.”

Is Bill Maher Calling for Political Wives to Get Back in the Kitchen?

Somehow I doubt Bill Maher will soon invite The Wall Street Journal’s John Fund back onto HBO’s Real Time. That’s because the unpretentious columnist publicly eviscerated both Maher and Democratic Congressman Anthony Wiener without breaking an intellectual sweat.
In a segment embedded at Fox Nation, the fireworks began as Maher and Weiner attempted to pass off juvenile insults as legitimate analysis.
Weiner: [Glenn Beck] has less than 300,000 viewers. So that’s about 150 shoes in his audience…
If you don’t get the joke, you’re not alone. After a few seconds of confused silence, Weiner explains that he was trying to be funny.

Roger Ebert Runs Drive By on Glenn Beck

It’s been a while since Roger Ebert has caught our attention here at NewsReal Blog. For a while there, it seemed as though nary a week went by without him spouting off some unintelligible nonsense about the Gulf oil spill or the Ground Zero Mosque. Like many of the sanctimonious Hollywood egos whose work he critiques, Ebert has something of a bully pulpit as a result of being such an accomplished film critic. He can’t help but take advantage of it to spout off on matters beyond his comprehension.

Does Egyptian Censorship Violate “Right” to Social Media?

I knew I was inviting a headache from the moment I saw the title. “Cairo Sunshine All Around the World” is a Huffington Post article by Raffi Cavoukian, the Egyptian-born Canadian singer who brought us “Baby Beluga” and “Bananaphone” under the mononym Raffi.
Are we witnessing the emergence of a new fundamental human right — the right of citizens to connect via social media — the digital right to communicate? Does any nation that disrupts or suspends the people’s right to communicate by this most democratic of means thus not suspend its own legitimacy?
Further on, he discovers another emergent right.
A new basic right is “the right to a future” for Earth and Child — for both our warming planet and her children scattered on all the lands called home. The right to a viable future is like a beacon to light universal human needs and hopes in this pivotal time for civilization.
Right about here is where the well-informed will recognize that Raffi is not the nut he appears to be, but a sophisticated leftist change agent. Raffi is propagating a view of “fundamental human rights” which is antithetical to the natural law upon which actual rights are based.

HuffPo Calls on American Cable Companies to Carry Al Jazeera English

As the crisis in Egypt continues to escalate, The Huffington Post has spearheaded a campaign to pressure American cable companies into carrying Al Jazeera English. On Monday, they provided a forum for the Qatari government-owned network’s director general, Wadah Khanfar, to make his case to an American audience.
Khanfar begins his appeal by highlighting the importance of the events taking place in Egypt, events which HuffPo insists are to Al Jazeera “what the Gulf War was to CNN.” He then points to Egyptian censorship of Al Jazeera in a bid to gain sympathy and portray his organization as a hard news network speaking truth to power.
Elsewhere, in the United States, Al Jazeera faces a different kind of blackout, based largely on misinformed views about our content and journalism. Some of the largest American cable and satellite providers have instituted corporate obstacles against Al Jazeera English. We are on the air and on the major cable system in the nation’s capital, and some of America’s leading policymakers in Washington, D.C., have told me that Al-Jazeera English is their channel of choice for understanding global issues. But we are not available in the majority of the 50 states for much of the general public.
We believe all Americans, not just those in senior governmental positions, could benefit from having the option to watch Al-Jazeera English — or not to watch us — on their television screens.
