Long before he became president of the United States, Ronald Reagan spoke of America as “the last best hope for man on earth.” His point was urgent then, and remains urgent now.

Not too long ago two friends of mine were talking to a Cuban refugee, a businessman who had escaped from Castro, and in the midst of his story one of my friends turned to the other and said, “We don’t know how lucky we are.” And the Cuban stopped and said, “How lucky you are! I had someplace to escape to.” In that sentence he told us the entire story. If we lose freedom here, there is no place to escape to. This is the last stand on Earth.

Peter Jackson may be one of the hardest working directors in Hollywood. There is a segment among the special features on the Superman Returns DVD where director Bryan Singer is called away from his production in Sydney to assist Jackson in directing King Kong, which was filming in New Zealand at the same time. Jackson had pushed himself so hard that he was literally falling asleep in the director’s chair. Singer was brought in to keep the production on schedule, seeing to Jackson’s intent during on-set naps.

Perhaps it is that work-‘til-you-drop ethic which underlies Jackson’s ongoing contention with a New Zealand actors’ union over the forthcoming production of The Hobbit.

George Clooney Shocks “Real Time” Audience by Defending Conservatives Against Maher Smear

There is a quote wrongly attributed to Winston Churchill, the true origins of which are disputed. It goes something like this.

If you’re not a liberal at 20, you have no heart. If you’re not conservative by 35, you have no brains.

The sentiment is half right. Conservatism certainly results from prioritizing reason above empathy. However, there is nothing inherent to that priority which indicates a lack of empathy. In other words, the 20 year old conservative is not heartless. He is merely ahead of the curve. Bill Maher’s Mirror Universe, Where Religious Freedom Means Restraining Religion

We’re at a point in our country’s history where Americans are so polarized, they have their own realities. These alternate universes collided last week during a debate between Delaware candidates for US Senate, Christine O’Donnell and Chris Coons. The point of contention was the First Amendment and its oft misrepresented “separation of church and state.”

On HBO’s Real Time, host Bill Maher led off his latest monologue with the subject, displaying equal parts exasperation and delight. By his account, O’Donnell is vapidly ignorant of the Constitution.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. In the case of these GQ photos of three young stars from FOX’s popular “Glee,” it’s tough to conjure up more than a couple syllables. These shots are just the tip of a very provocative iceberg.

The Parents Television Council (PTC), “a non-partisan education organization advocating responsible entertainment,” thinks GQ’s spread “borders on pedophilia.” That may be a bit of hyperbole, but their concern is not without merit. A recent admission from Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher reveals Hoth, site of the doomed rebel base in the first act of The Empire Strikes Back, to be home to more than one kind of snow.

“We did cocaine on the set of ‘Empire,’ in the ice planet,” she said in an interview while promoting her one-woman show in Australia. “I didn’t even like the coke that much, it was just a case of getting on whatever train I needed to take to get high.”

Whatever damage such a revelation may cause to already sullied childhood memories, Fisher’s ownership of her indiscretion and the addiction which followed are enough to make up for it.

Will 2012 Bring the End of the World As We Know It?

When I was younger, I used to enjoy listening to Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM, an overnight radio talk show devoted to fringe topics like the paranormal, conspiracy theories, and UFOs. A recurring subject was the end of the world. One of the apocalyptic prophecies commonly discussed was derived from the Mayan calendar and its final date of December 21, 2012.

To a teenager coming of age in the ‘90’s, 2012 seemed a long way off. Since then, talk of 2012 and what it may bode has escalated. There was even an over-the-top disaster film tackling the subject last spring.

As the date draws near, focus has shifted from anticipating the end of the world to anticipating the end of an age. Priests of the New Thought, like self-described “conspiriacist” David Icke, speak of a coming “enlightenment” or “awakening” or “shift in consciousness.” Continue Reading Will 2012 Bring the End of the World As We Know It?…

Brett Favre Sexting Is Racist, Says Left-Wing Misogynist Bill Maher

It’s not difficult to admire Dana Loesch. Her latest merit was earned opposite Bill Maher and fellow Real Time panelists John Legend and Markos Moulitas. Maher would ask a question, pause just long enough to cue her response, then join the other two in talking over her. Such ungallant behavior is hardly surprising, and was not the last evidence of Maher’s inability to confront conservatism honestly.

During his “New Rules” segment, Maher threw out two theories regarding the psychology of conservatives that are as specious as they are offensive. In fact, these statements are so ridiculous, they disprove each other.

Building off a tasteless rant regarding Vikings quarterback Brett Favre and his alleged sexual indiscretions, Maher manufactures a deeper implication which is more creative than credible.

“V” Is For Victory: 10 Brazenly Conservative Themes in ABC’s Alien Invasion Remake

It’s not the kind of entertainment you’ve come to expect from Hollywood. ABC’s remake of the 1983 television miniseries V tackles plainly modern issues from a decisively conservative perspective.

Though the science fiction and fantasy genres are often utilized to comment on controversial political issues, the messages conveyed are typically left of center. Star Trek is perhaps the consummate example of a science fiction show which impressed upon its audience a leftist view of culture, religion, and politics. Its back-story presented an Earth which had progressed beyond divisions of race, nationality, religion, and politics. The United Federation of Planets was a stand in for the United Nations, portrayed as a wholly benevolent entity unburdened by corruption. The message was explict. This can be our future. We can cast off sin through sheer force of will and craft a post-modern utopia. Continue Reading “V” Is For Victory: 10 Brazenly Conservative Themes in ABC’s Alien Invasion Remake…

It is ironic that so-called liberals effectively cast themselves as high-minded intellectuals, as if their ideas are methodically contemplated through reason applied to evidence, when their ranks are typically as monolithic and monophonic as a choir in Gregorian chant. Regardless of evidence, there is little tolerance among the Left for any who deviate from their sheet music.
