Only two short years ago, Barrack Obama was regaled as a messianic figure. Rolling Stone had a March 2008 cover photo where candidate Obama stood heroic, fists planted firmly at the hip, backlit against a bright blue sky as if he may launch up, up, and away.

Remember Peggy Joseph? She was a rank and file Obama supporter who cashed in her fifteen minutes of fame when interviewed at a campaign rally. She described the event as “the most memorable moment” of her life. Continue Reading Has Obama’s Arrogance Triggered a Hollywood Faceplam?…

To Roger Ebert’s Followers: Which Side Is Truly Prejudiced In the Cordoba House Debate?

I appreciate Roger Ebert’s recent effort to promote my detailed breakdown of his take on the Cordoba House mosque near ground zero of the 9/11 attacks. To be fair, I’m not sure he intended to promote it. However, when you tweet a link to over 200,000 followers, that’s the end result.

Rather than address the content of my post, Ebert instead choose to focus on its format. He criticized NRB’s editorial choice to organize larger posts into several pages when multiple points are addressed.

Ten things he knows better than me, including how to spread them across 11 pages to drive up the hit count.

Of course, no amount of format trickery is going to drive traffic if no one is interested in reading past Page One, or lure readers quite like a tweet from the likes of Ebert. If he truly took exception to the post, I’m not sure why he opted to draw attention to it.

Roger Ebert’s Moral and Intellectual Bankruptcy: 10 Ridiculous Statements Supporting Cordoba House

Here at The Concession Stand, NRB’s pop culture division, we are sustained by a steady stream of boneheaded remarks from celebrities grand and small. One of the gifts that keeps on giving is Chicago-Sun Times film critic turned political pseudo-blogger Roger Ebert.

Ebert was recognized by the National Society of Newspaper Columnists as one of the best bloggers of 2010 for his “clarity and depth.” Such an accolade is laughable when you objectively consider an average Ebert post. Far from deep or clear, a typical Ebert rant is a long piece of well crafted gibberish.

John Mellencamp pines for the good old days when technology wasn’t so intimidating, and entertainment media was far easier to control:

“I think the Internet is the most dangerous thing invented since the atomic bomb,” he said. “It’s destroyed the music business. It’s going to destroy the movie business.”

As Predicted, Polygamists Run the Same-Sex Playbook

One of the foreseen consequences of the legal recognition of “gay marriage” has been follow-up arguments for recognition of other counter-cultural relationships. In convincing society that the purpose of marriage is self-fulfillment, rather than the stability of a relationship tasked by nature with the bearing of healthy children, “gay marriage” advocates have opened the door for any sexual relationship to be equated with marriage. The only defining characteristic is “people in love.”

Hence, in the wake of Judge Vaughn Walker’s decision to overturn California’s Proposition 8 and allow same-sex couples to “marry,” it comes as no surprise that the next counter-culturists to emerge from the closet are polygamists. As usual, Hollywood carries the water.

Guilty Until Proven Innocent: The Left’s Racial Delusion

The incessant accusation from the Left – framing the Tea Party as a racist movement – remains tiresome and juvenile. The way the charge is articulated reveals both intellectual dishonesty and disregard for the rule of law. AlterNet’s Margaret Kimberly demonstrates this well in her recent article, “What the Tea Parties Really Want: A Return to “White Man’s Country.”

After all is said and done, what much of the so-called Tea Party wants is a return to America as a White Man’s Country. There are a few obstacles in their way, including the U.S. Constitution, but that’s not insurmountable.

It’s quite odd that Kimberly evokes the Constitution as a champion of her values, only to ridicule the Tea Party for doing the same.

Last October, when Louisiana Justice of the Peace Keith Bardwell refused to issue a marriage license for an interracial couple because he didn’t “want to put children in a situation they didn’t bring on themselves,” the archaic sentiment was a national story. This week brings a similar headline.

A Chicago couple, their agent, and their broker are accused of some nasty discrimination that goes beyond being overly particular.

Daniel and Adrienne Sabbia have been charged with refusing to sell a Bridgeport home to a Black couple because of their race, reports Chicago Breaking News.

The Proposition 8 Ruling Is About Personal Affirmation, Not Equal Protection

There are two issues in play in the ongoing controversy over U.S. District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker’s decision to strike down California’s Proposition 8. The first is the definition of marriage, the issue the proposition was intended to settle in that state. Of greater import is whether state’s have the right to craft family law, or whether the federal government may ignore the plain wording of the Ninth and Tenth Amendments and imply powers from vague constitutional clauses.

These are distinct issues. Judge Walker and George W. Bush’s former Solicitor General Ted Olson have interwoven them. Their constitutional interpretation is guided by their preconceived opinion on same-sex marriage, rather than a genuine attempt to interpret the intent of the law. Because I think same-sex unions are equal to marriage, the due process and equal protection clauses apply. Olson’s attempt to pass this off as anything but judicial activism is mind-numbing. Whether the federal government may intervene in family law is determined by enumerated powers, not a judge’s opinion of a particular contested issue.

Unwitting Conservatism in a Galaxy Far, Far Away : 7 Ways “Star Wars” Bends to the Right

Science fiction and fantasy have always been ideal genres for exploring controversial political, religious, and philosophical ideas. The absurdity of circumstance in which such stories are set serve to detach an audience from reality, creating a kind of hypothetical laboratory for exploring thoughts which might be rejected elsewhere.

As a libertarian conservative and a life-long Star Wars fan, I was somewhat taken aback by 2005’s culminative installment Revenge of the Sith. Politics had dominated much of the prequel trilogy, but had been kept within the context of the story. Sith was different, as New York Times film critic A. O. Scott noted.

Mr. Lucas is clearly jabbing his light saber in the direction of some real-world political leaders. At one point, Darth Vader, already deep in the thrall of the dark side and echoing the words of George W. Bush, hisses at Obi-Wan, ‘If you’re not with me, you’re my enemy.’ Obi-Wan’s response is likely to surface as a bumper sticker during the next election campaign: ‘Only a Sith thinks in absolutes.’

Irony: Def Jam Co-Founder Demands Tolerance of Ground Zero Mosque

Good guys are always at a disadvantage. When you play by the rules, value life, and revere freedom, it’s tough to outmaneuver those who don’t.

As Americans, we believe individuals have the right to worship and express their faith as they choose. It is arguably our oldest and most fundamental value, the drive which pushed our Old World forefathers across the sea. To uphold it, we are willing to endure a great deal, and we have. However, our innate tolerance may be our undoing if we fail to recognize when it is used against us.

Adding his voice to the cacophony of frenzied debate over the Ground Zero mosque, Def Jam co-founder turned prolific leftist commentator Russell Simmons is quick to condemn any criticism of the Islamic center as bigotry. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf’s newly green-lit plan to build a towering mosque – the Cordoba House - overshadowing the sacred ground where the World Trade Center once stood has been widely condemned. At best, it is audacious and distasteful. At worst, it is a horrific declaration of victory in jihad. To Simmons however, it is an innocent expression of faith which Americans ought not question:
