Saul Alinsky advised his fellow radicals to “deride [the] enemy and dismiss him as someone unworthy of being taken seriously because he is either intellectually deficient or morally bankrupt.” This tactic often manifests in blanket assertions reliant more on volume and repetition than evidence.

Though I doubt singer Sheryl Crow reads Alinsky, she certainly wields his tactic. Continue Reading Irony: Global Warming True Believer Sheryl Crow Trashes Tea Parties as “Uneducated”…

On Marijuana, Social Conservatives Trend Statist

The central conceit of the Left is their regard for outcome above principle, results above rights. “Progressivism” repackages the age-old idea that society has a collective right superior to the individual’s. We saw this in the argument for universal health care, where the Left regarded the outcome of “universal coverage” above the principle of personal liberty.

Unfortunately, this conceit is not limited to the Left. Social conservatives are willing to borrow à la carte from statist arguments when the results suit their taste. No issue evokes this phenomenon more than drug control policy.

NewsRealBlog hosted much debate on the legalization of marijuana over the weekend. The discussion was prompted by Sarah Palin’s recent statement that private in-home consumption is a negligible concern. Calvin Freiburger objected to the characterization of prohibition as a liberty issue, citing among his supporters Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and John Locke. Though Calvin is clearly not a statist, his argument depends upon a fundamentally statist belief.

Roger Ebert Gives Oil Two Thumbs Down

If you would think that, after a lifetime of reviewing films, former Sun-Times critic Roger Ebert would have learned storytelling through osmosis, I’m afraid you would be wrong. In a recent Sun-Times blog post, responding to the British Petroleum oil spill, Ebert spins a disjointed yarn. Deftly channeling the psychotic nature of the environmental Left, he appears to long for human suffering.

Ebert, an outspoken proponent of the Left‘s agenda, seems to echo President Obama’s Tuesday night speech from the Oval Office. The world is addicted to oil, and getting our fix is killing the planet. The solution: turn back the clock on consumption and embrace alternatives three heel-clicks away.

Regulations Are Taxes

*reg·u·la·tion (rĕg′yə-lāshən) noun

1. The act of regulating or the state of being regulated.

2. A principle, rule, or law designed to control or govern conduct.

3. A governmental order having the force of law. Also called an executive order.

4. A hidden tax on businesses.

The first three definitions of the word regulation are common and well known. The fourth definition isn’t because it’s not in the dictionary and very few people see how regulations are hidden taxes on businesses. Yet if one looks at the third definition of the word tax it is apparent that regulations are indeed a hidden tax on businesses.

The Last Bastion of the Pro-Choice Position

NewsRealBlog recently hosted a series of articles revisiting the well-tread abortion debate. Given the fact all participants were credentialed conservatives, the nature of argument was quite unique. The question was not so much whether abortion is wrong, but how much it actually matters in the real world. Surely, in the current political environment, social issues have taken a back-burner to what may seem more fundamental concerns – growth of government, fiscal disaster, and loss of liberty.

However, the root philosophical point underlying those concerns is the same underlying abortion. Of what value is an individual human being? How ought we compare the value of one to another? Abortion is an issue which draws out heartfelt answers to these questions.

The good news is that most people seem to answer those questions correctly. An individual human being is invaluable. Each human being ought to be considered equal. This consensus between pro-life and pro-choice leads inevitably to a final attempt at rationalization. The unborn are not human. If possessed of the slightest decency, this is the only argument the abortionist has.

Rosie O’Donnell: Anti-Semite or Psychotic?

Rosie Hearts Helen Thomas

Helen Thomas, now former columnist for Hearst newspapers, has a track record of “utter detachment from reality.” In a 2006 column, Thomas characterized her colleagues in the White House press corp as “lap dogs” for the Bush administration leading up to the Iraq war. With axiomatic confidence she wrote,

“They lapped up everything the Pentagon and White House could dish out — no questions asked.”

This raised the eyebrow of National Review Online author Stephen Spruiell, who called Thomas to task. Citing a March 2003 transcript of a White House press conference, Spruiell proved journalists had piled on the administration. He concluded that Thomas’s assertion was “nonsense.”

There is a word for the inability to discern reality from delusion. It is psychosis. It goes a long way toward accounting for Thomas’s expressed political beliefs.

The same could be said of Rosie O’Donnell. In the wake of calling for the government seizure of British Petroleum by executive order, O’Donnell demonstrated willful ignorance of fact, while excusing Thomas’s anti-Semitism.

Was Apology For “Get Out Of Palestine” Genuine?

"I deeply regret my comments..."

As the eldest child, and the only boy, I was often called upon to apologize to my sisters. Whether I was pulling their hair, breaking their toys, or insulting their character, our mother would often demand a punitive apology. The regret I expressed at such moments was not for any harm I caused, but for having been caught.

Once, when I was in the sixth grade, I was horsing around with my youngest sister near several sheets of  propped up drywall. I carelessly knocked over the stack, causing an avalanche which my sister barely escaped. My mother came unhinged, insisting my actions could have killed my sister.

Prostitute Sues Over Film Based On Life

Cinematical reports a woman whose real-life story was translated to the big screen in 2008’s Finding Amanda is suing her uncle, who wrote and directed the film, “for the mental and emotional distress she’s suffered by being featured as a character.” Alex Daily was the basis for a character whose uncle travels to Las Vegas to stage an intervention to end her prostitution. Apparently, the portrayal hit a little too close to home.

Daily alleges that [Peter] Tolan — [the uncle] — did little to hide the fact that it was based on her life. Court documents claim that “much of the dialogue, facts, and events really happened,” and the character of Amanda “looked, dressed, and behaved like Daily.” They also assert that the producers did little to hide the fact that the story was based on real events. Daily was never consulted on any of this and feels her privacy has been violated.
